Avoiding Current Phone Scams

Department of Health Fraud Alert

Phone scams are becoming more and more prevalent in todays society and can be detrimental both financially and emotionally. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of the Inspector General Hotline telephone number is being used as part of a scam. The Health and Human Services 1-800-HHS-TIPS hotline telephone number is being used to contact people in an attempt to get their personal information.

Health and Human Services never uses the hotline number to make outgoing calls and urges individuals to never provide personal information to unknown individuals including social security number, medicare number, date of birth, credit card or bank account information.

If you believe you have been affected by this scam please report it to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of the Inspector General (1-800-447-8477) or to the Federal Trade Commission (1-877-382-4357).

When in doubt, hang up and call the organizations main number yourself. If you do not get the same information upon calling back, and are unable to find the original person you spoke with, report it!

Also, it is important to remember that the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) will never initiate contact with you by phone or email and any contact you receive from persons claiming to be the IRS should be reported to 1-800-366-4484.
